In steel-making today, gas blowing in a ladle is indispensable for improvement of steel quality and for continuous casting.
SNREF purging plug is characterized by their high strength, good erosion resistance and corrosion resistance, high blowing rate and good safety. They are widely used for continuous casting ladles and refining ladles.
 
PRODUCT OVERVIEW
Purging plug, being an important element in high temperature refining metallurgy, having been widely used
in many industries, such as iron and steel, ferro alloy, non-ferrous metals etc.
 
We have more than 20 years production experience in purging plug and housing block, with annual
poduction capacity over 50,000 sets.

PRODUCT TYPE AND PERFORMANCE
With the development of ladle refining technology and ladle lining refractories, higher requirements are
imposed on the blowing rate and lifetime of purging refractories.
In order to meet the metallurgical needs of different steel types and different refining processes (RH, LF, VD,
VOD, VAD, CAS, ANS), we have developed the following series of purging refractories.

-Slot Plug(slit plug)
Slot plug is the most common structure in purging plug.
The gas channel could be designed and customized according to actual on-site using conditions, including refining steel grade,
refining workmanship, ladle capacity, temperature, hydrostatic pressure of liquid steel etc.
This can achieve the best blowing effect for purging plugs, ensure the longest service life, safety, stability and best air
permeability.
 
2. Material and Chemical Composition
At present, the widely-adopted purging plug is slit type, materials chromite corundum spinel or corundum spinel. The technical
parameter as per below:
1. Adopting high quality materials with good feature of anti liquid steel and slag erosion, in order to ensure the blowing
though performance of purging plug.
2. Through constant research on optimization of matrix composition and production process, ensuring the unifirm structure,
good volume stability, good anti slag penetration and slag corrosion feature, good high temperature strength, in order to
withstand the flushing from high temperature airflow and liquid steel. Our slit plug also comes with excellent thermal shock
resistance, in order to avoid the reduction of air blowing rate caused by latered peeling or fracture under high temperature.
3. The main feature for slit plug is high blowing rate, wide adjustable range of flow rate, easier for operation control during
refining process.
4. By selecting different raw materials and workmanship, we can produce slit plug with flow rate ranges from 12% to 20%, low
temperature/medium temperature/high temperature various type plugs to meet different application conditions.
 
5. Application characteristics:
Slit plug is the most widely used purging plug in China. Produced by vibration casting and molding of high performance
corundum spinel castable, firing under high temperature, high temperature strength, excellent high temperature erosion
resistance and easy production procedure, with much wider adjustable range of on-site refining operation flow.

-Porous plug
Porous plug has better porosity and permeability.
Production technology is adding carbon-containing compound into mixture, since carbon-containing compound can burn out without
residue at low temperature, so we adopt low temperature burning out intermediate materials to get the initial porosity.
In porous type plug, inside distributes interpenetrating gas channels in different sizes.
When blowing stop, the steel and slag from ladle will infiltrate into the deep areas of the plug, to form a secure layer on working surface.

 
3.2 Material and Chemical Composition
Porous plug has better porosity and permeability.
Production technology is adding carbon-containing compound into mixture, since carbon-containing compound can burn out
without residue at low temperature, so we adopt low temperature burning out intermediate materials to get the initial porosity.
In porous type plug, inside distributes interpenetrating gas channels in different sizes.
When blowing stops, the steel and slag from ladle will infiltrate into the deep areas of the plug, to form a secure layer on

3.3 Application characteristics:
3.3.1 Resistant to slag
In order to increase resistance ability to slag and liquid steel penetration, Cr2O3 or chromium corundum is always added into
corundum spinel. Cr2O3 has the same crystal structure with a-Al2O3, the adding of Cr2O3 can effectively
improve the slag resistance ability of materials, also can improve the gas channel blocking condition caused by liquid steel
penetration.
The aluminum-chrome solid solution and independent chrome-bearing glass phase which were formed by Cr2O3 fine powder
and Al2O3 under high temperature, can form into liquid phase with certain viscosity, when meet with the slag in steel smelting
process. This liquid phase can avoid the slag erosion to porous plugs, and also absorb
the Iron oxide and magnesium oxide, forming dense spinel on plug's working surface, thus further improve the slag resistance
of the plug.
3.3.2 Thermal shock resistant
The main damage to porous plug is thermal shock. As the tapping temperature increasing, there existing big temperature gap
onto working surface during work and break. After introducing spinel phase into the structure, the thermal resistance of
purging plug is increased significantly.
The oxide and non-oxide added into porous plug will form into solid solution phase with aggregate under high temperature,
which will increase the high temperature strength, air permeability, resistance to slags of the plug.
After high temperature burning for the plug, the performance is increased to meet different steelmaking conditions.

The segment plug is preferably made of good anti-stripping materials, the block body is not easy to occur fracture, with longer  service life. The cracks between different plates will not expand, so this segment plug design can avoid failure of bottom blowing  caused by tranverse brick fracture.

Application characteristics: In order to adapt to more and more strict refining conditions(especially special steel), and to meet the requirements of increasing  ladle life, the volume of plug becomes bigger and bigger. However the traditional slit type plug has single material and single  structure, easy to cause the phenomenon of tranverse fracture and failure of air blowing. Our researched segment plug has successfully soved the problem of fracture existing in traditional slit plug. Significantly increasing  the stability of refining process, ensuring the realization and improvement of quality refined steel.

 
Compared with traditional slit plug, our sgement plug obtains below advantages:
-1 Simultaneous improving the plugs' thermal shock resistance and erosion resistance.
-2 The design of segment(plate) and compsition structure obtains good thermal conductivity and low stress characteristic,
significantly increase the air blowing rate.
-3 Stable flowing rate, good blowing through performance, higher stability in refining process operation.
-4 Almost no fracture layer, reducing the labour strength during oxygen cleaning of plugs after casting.
-5 Lifetime much increased, synchronized with the slag line.
Picture 3 shows the comparison on thermal stress between slit type plug and segment plug.
Conclusion: After argon blowing finishes, the max thermal stress for slit type is 356.55MPa, while thermal stress for segment plug
is significantly reduced to 111.93MPa, stress reduced 69%.
The thermal stress for slit and segment plug is equally the same after heating and steel tapping finishes, but after argon blowing, the
structure of segment composite type is much better than slit type plug.

A: The requirements of refractories for ladle mainly include:

Q:What are the reasons for the destruction of refractories for ladle?
A: The main causes of damage are as follows:
When the ladle transports high-temperature molten steel, the high-temperature molten steel and slag at about 1680ºC scour and erode it, especially in the slag line part, the scouring and erosion is more serious, and it is an important factor to decide the service life of the ladle.
LF and other extra-oven refining treatment on the unburnt brick damage is serious.

Q:What steel grades are different materials of slide plate bricks suitable for respectively?
A: Different materials of slide plate bricks are applicable to different steel grades. For example,
